Turmeric Margarita + Mango Salsa

There are a few drinks that scream warm weather to me, high on that list are margaritas. Sitting out in the sunshine margarita in your hand, hanging with friends and munching on chips and salsa, doesn’t get much better than that. I would argue chips, salsa, and margs are one of the best ways to bring people together.

I know you have heard me talk about turmeric before and all of the amazing health benefits it has. If you haven’t read that post you can find it here. Warning, it turns everything it touches bright orange. I wasn’t sure what to call this drink because I used Mombin Plum juice, but it is not widely available so I didn’t want to highlight it. Living in the Philippines I have access to a lot of unique tropical fruits that are not widely available in some other places around the world. You can replace the plum juice with peach or nectarine. 

The Mombin Plum has a sour- sweet taste and is not overly sweet. There are few, if any, commercial orchards of Mombin Plum and it is collected from the wild plants, which is part of what makes it so unique. I found the juice at a sustainability expo and a permaculture farm was selling it. The fact that it is not commercially available is great because I know I am supporting alternative farming practices when I buy it from local farmers. It has high phenolic content which are known to have preventative disease and anti-inflammatory attributes, antioxidants, as well as an excellent source of potassium, magnesium, phosphorus and copper.

The Recipe :

Turmeric Margarita

1 1/2 oz tequila

1 1/2 oz triple sec

1/2 oz turmeric simple syrup (recipe below)

1/2 oz fresh lime or calamansi juice

3 oz Mombin Plum, peach, mango, or nectarine juice

1 oz water or let the ice cubes melt a little bit to dilute the drink just a bit

  1. In a cocktail shaker add ice and all ingredients. Shake until chilled and pour into an ice filled cocktail glass.

Simple Syrup

1/2 cup honey

1/2 cup water

1 inch knob of turmeric, finely chopped

  1. Mix honey, water and turmeric together in a small saucepan or skillet and bring to a simmer. Once simmering turn off the stove and remove from heat. Let the syrup infuse with the turmeric for at least 30 minutes, until cooled. Store in the refrigerator, it can be made 3 days in advance.

Mango Salsa

2 mangos, diced

2 tomatoes (about 1/2 cup), diced

1 small red onion, finely diced

1 jalapeño or more depending on spice desire, finely chopped

1 tablespoon lime juice

2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, chopped

  1. Add all ingredients to a bowl and stir!
