Basil Clementine Spritzer

Staying hydrated can be hard sometimes, especially this time of year. It is hot and humid in Manila and I feel like no matter how much water I drink it’s hardly enough to stay hydrated. We are made of 60-70% water. At first when you are not hydrated you can sometimes mistake the thirst cue for hunger. After that you can feel weak, tired, dizzy or get a headache. So here is a fun way to keep you hydrated without feeling like you are forcing yet another glass of water.

This drink is delicious, refreshing, and has a boost of nutrition from basil and citrus. I added a dash of lemon bitters for a little extra fancy twist. Bitters were originally used for medicinal purposes in the 1800’s. They gained popularity in cocktails during prohibition to make bad liquor taste better. Bitters are made from alcohol being infused with a bittering agent (bark or root), herbs and spices. They are alcoholic but because you only add a few drops, simply for flavor they will not have the same effect that a cocktail has and you can drink this anytime of day.


The Recipe:

1 bottle of sparkling water (San Pellegrino, Perrier, or other)

1 handful of fresh basil

1-2 clementines, juiced

2-3 dashes lemon bitters (or bitters of choice)

  1. Muddle basil and clementine juice in the bottom of a cup or cocktail shaker. You want the basil to be broken up into small pieces.
  2. Pour over a glass of ice, add sparkling water and dashes of lemon bitters. Stir to combine.
